Facing Cancer Together Posts The Ode Blog

The group Facing Cancer Together posted my blog about my 10 year anniversary and Ode To An Adventure EP on their website. It’s incredible to see it shared there for so many to see! Thank you so much for the continued support!

Be sure to check it out, and check the rest of their website out, especially the digital quilt, and if you like, take the time to make your own and add it to the collection. It’s a really cool project!

Hello everyone! Today’s post actually is not about Backyard Heroes. A number of years back, I had another art project. It was music as well as a film. I called it Ode To An Adventure. It all started with my senior project in high school. I set out to record a concept album of my experience with cancer. However, during my senior year I wasn’t even one year off of treatment at that point. So due to growing personal struggles with the subject, it was shortened to an EP.

Ode became a concept EP that chronicles the mindset of a teenage boy as he’s faced with the possibility and eventual diagnosis of leukemia.

10 years ago today, marks the start of what you could say was the most infamous four days of my life. Today would be my first night in the hospital, which you’ll here me sing about in Answers, then finally, May 14th will be the official day of my diagnosis. I listened to the EP last night for the first time in a long time, and as you can imagine, I was overcome with a crazy amount of emotions. As tough as it is for me to listen to the stories told in these songs, I also can’t help but know that I am who I am because of this whole experience, this twisted gift. I wouldn’t change a thing.

So to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of my diagnosis, I thought it’d be special to share the story that started it all.

This is my story. If you’d like to learn more about each song, I wrote descriptions for each one that you can see by clicking the title of each song on this page:

I used this as a chance to share “liner notes” about each song. Thank you to my cousins Dan and Bob, and my brother Greg for making this project with me. Thank you to all my friends and family who supported me through everything. Thank you all for listening. It’s been a crazy decade, and I can’t wait to see what comes next!

PS - As you can hear in the newest of Backyard Heroes songs and if you come see us live, I like to think I’ve grown a lot more as a vocalist. I was 18 when I recorded this EP and hadn’t “found my voice” just yet. Regardless, I’m still so proud of what we accomplished and how it came out. Thanks again!

We're still here!

We may have been a little quieter than usual, but we haven’t gone anywhere! Click the title to read a special update to the fans!

Shows, Free songs, exclusive songs, battle for warped! All exciting things! Check it out!

Backyard Heroes recently had an awesome weekend. Worked on some new songs, met with the amazing organization Stupid Cancer. Really looking forward to working with them. More on that later. For now, we bring you the first of videos released from our show at 10th Street Live this past weekend.

Here you not only see Backyard Heroes perform It’s Time, a song they recorded the first version of we think exactly a year ago that day, but you also get to witness two very white dudes in skinny jeans cover Party Rock by LMFAO. We’re just that awesome.

Enjoy!

The other day Bobby realized and reminded me that we’ve been a band now for about a year. We started writing last march just here and there. Then we finished a song called It’s Time and recorded it’s first demo with our friend in NYC in April. That’s how Backyard Heroes started. We’d been best friends for a lifetime and had written music separately, then finally started to try writing together. It’s pretty awesome to see all we’ve accomplished and gotten to do in this past year and we look forward to doing so much more in the future. So today, I post our song It’s Time. This isn’t the original NYC demo however, this is the version you can find on our demo EP that we sell at shows. Hope you enjoy it, and thanks for sticking with us!

Hey everyone, yeah Bobby usually handles the blogs, but I’m still awake and decided to send one out.

First off, we sadly have to announce the cancellation of our first Delaware show. All is well, just ran into some scheduling conflicts we weren’t able to dodge. If you were planning on going though, go out and support the other artists. We’ve never met them, but they sounded rad and it’s a free show! Hopefully we’ll schedule another show soon.

Having said that, we still have our show on April 7th at 10th Street Live in Kenilworth, NJ. So very excited for it. We love the people at 10th Street Live very much. We stopped in for an open mic night once and are now gracing everyone with a full set. So come on out and have fun with us.

Let’s see… anything else? I think there’s some news, but I don’t know what I’m supposed to announce yet or not sooo… yeah. What I can say is that we surpassed and broke down the walls of 1,000 votes towards a spot on Warped Tour. Thank you so much to everyone for your support, it means the world to us. We’re hoping to get on that acoustic stage for sure, but if we ended up at least meeting some rad new people and they enjoy our tunes as well… well then it was worth it.

So thank you again, and thank you for reading this rare edition to the blogosphere of Backyard Heroes. I now return you to your usual and very handsome, Bobby, for your future blog readings. I’ll pop in again sometime!

EAAAAGGGLLLLEEEEEEE!!!

Backyard Heroes featured in a newspaper in Delaware for our upcoming show at Mojo Main in Newark, DE. The show will take place April 4th, we go on at 11 pm. We’re very excited and this was a rad surprise. Special thanks to Tim’s brother Greg for catching it!

Backyard Heroes is trying to get on Warped Tour! Help us out! They are doing this awesome new acoustic stage this year where three locals for each date will be chosen to play on this stage. It would mean the world to us to have that opportunity! Vote for us, listen to our songs, watch our videos, check out our rad and handsome photos, and most importantly, spread the word for others to do the same!
